Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful conducts the Great Truckee Meadows Community Clean-up annually in our open spaces. Over the past 5 years, we have engages over 2500 volunteers and picked up over 500 tons of trash from our open spaces. Illegal dump sites include items such as abandoned vehicles, large appliances, furniture, hazardous waste, and other discarded items. These illegal dump sites are a physical danger to the people who use those areas, a fire hazard, unsightly, and removal of this trash costs tax dollars.
The Illegal Dumping Task Force has made a number of accomplishments over the past 5 years. Illegal dump sites are mapped by the Washoe County Sheriff’s Department and they have also conducted sting operations. They continue to monitor and clean-up hot spots with Washoe County Sheriff’s Office work crews. The Illegal Dumping Task Force ran a multi-media awareness and educational campaign in Spring of 2008 and 2009. An illegal dumping hot line, 329-DUMP, was established for reporting illegal dump sites. The Illegal Dumping Task Force helped with the passing of AB 353, a bill that helped establish a program for the control of unlawful dumping.
The Illegal Dumping Task Force is broken into three committees, Education/PR, Subsidy, and Legislation/Code/Long Range Planning. These committees are identifying targets and initiating actions steps to tackle the problem of illegal dumping.
University of Nevada Reno conducted a survey about illegal dumping in Northern Nevada. The data collected included residential perceptions of illegal dumping as well as if they would be willing to pay for extended cleanup and enforcement. You may view the report below:
