Programs > Open Space Cleanups

BAHiddenValleyKTMB began conducting Open Space Cleanups in 2001, organizing and mobilizing groups of volunteers to help preserve and maintain publicly-owned areas within the Truckee Meadows.

In 2006, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, working with Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space, Washoe County Environmental Health, City of Sparks, Bureau of Land Management, United States Forest Service, and the City of Reno, established the Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup (GTMCC).

Focusing on illegal dumping areas in and around the Truckee Meadows, more than 500 volunteers removed 77 tons of trash at the first GTMCC. Since then, volunteers have removed nearly 800 tons of trash from our open spaces and other dumping hot spots.

As a result of this collaboration, KTMB and municipal land owners realized cleaning up after illegal dumpers is not the best way to prevent illegal dumping. Thus the Illegal Dumping Task Force was created to address the best ways to educate the Truckee Meadows community. For more information about how you can help the Illegal Dumping Task Force, send us an email or call 775.851.5185.
