Annual Report 2020-21

A Letter from our Executive Director

Mark Cameron - Executive Director KTMB

Mark Cameron - Executive Director KTMB

I have to begin by offering a heartfelt thanks to our community; for the continued financial support of those who have partnered with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) and through the tireless actions of our wonderful volunteers who bring depth and meaning to the impact of the KTMB mission.  KTMB, along with our supporters and volunteers have put action behind a shared dedication to creating a more sustainable and beautiful region through waste reduction, education and active community involvement.  Honestly, the support we received from the community coupled with direction from our Board of Trustees and our Committee leaders is the primary reason KTMB made it through a very difficult pandemic – a situation that none of us could have ever predicted and one that continues to affect us today.

Now more than ever, with support and direction from dedicated staff, KTMB is emerging from the pandemic as a community that continues to engage in KTMB’s mission by cleaning and beautifying our parks, rivers and public lands; educating students and adults about the Truckee River Watershed, noxious and invasive weeds, recycling and by helping businesses implement sustainable practices; all of this, for the good of our community and our planet.

In February this year I was honored to assume the role of Executive Director at KTMB.  With the help of a devoted and enthusiastic staff, I am confident that I can help to retain what KTMB has meant to the community through the years while remaining flexible enough to see what new heights we might reach one day in the future.

As we move forward, I believe KTMB has a promising future.  And while much has changed through the years one thing remains the same; our community’s shared love of this region we call home and the commitment KTMB and our volunteers embody to make it the best and most beautiful it can be.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Mark Cameron
Executive Director KTMB

Truckee River Clean-up

The 17th annual Truckee River Cleanup was held on Saturday, September 26th, 2020. As in years prior, the projects spanned from Verdi to Lockwood and also included some tributaries to the river. The goal of this event is working to keep the Truckee River Watershed clean and pristine for all to enjoy by completing a variety of projects throughout the region. This year we faced the challenge of the pandemic with smaller group gatherings and the same amount of locations as years past, yet, our clean-up efforts stayed on track from previous years.

21,360 • Pounds of Greenwaste Removed
50,095 • Pounds of Trash Removed

Great Community Clean-up

KTMB’s Great Community Cleanup is an annual opportunity in the spring for the Truckee Meadows community to come together to focus on the cleanup of illegal dumpsites and the removal of noxious weeds before they bloom and spread. In 2020, KTMB had to cancel this event and reschedule the projects in a smaller capacity. We are happy to say 2021's Great Community Cleanup was back at full capacity and volunteers made a huge impact throughout the Truckee Meadows by removing some of the regions most persistent illegal dumpsites and planting more native plants in a day than KTMB has ever done before.

693 • Total Volunteers
20,315 • Pounds of Greenwaste Removed
94,520• Pounds of Trash Removed
136 • Storm Drains Stenciled

Christmas Tree Recycling

The holiday season brought another successful year of Christmas Tree Recycling where we met both our tree and donation goals. By giving residents an alternative to dumping trees in the desert, we’re able to reduce fire risk in our region come summertime. Apart from a few trees that were taken to the Sierra Safari Zoo as toys for their big cats, all of the trees collected were chipped into mulch that has been used for weed abatement and park beautification projects across the Truckee Meadows.

Illegal Dumping Task Force

Established in 2006, the Illegal Dumping Task Force is a collaborative of local agencies coordinated by Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful to address the issue of illegal dumping and find solutions. The focus in recent years has shifted to abandoned vehicles on public land. Despite the pandemic, our partners have continued to dedicate time to cleaning up dumpsites, including these vehicles.

To report an illegal dumpsite that needs to be cleaned, please call 329-DUMP or use the WCSO app, free in the app store. To report an individual(s) who is actively illegally dumping waste, call WCSO dispatch at 775-785-WCSO.

ADOPT-A-SPOT PROGRAM

The Adopt-A-Spot Program was designed to bring community volunteers together in collaboration with our partners to enhance the overall quality, safety, and beauty of public spaces in the Truckee Meadows. When clean-ups resumed in July after the COVID hiatus, the community came together to support the Program by providing their time and efforts to maintain, energize, restore and beautify our region with a resurgence of clean-ups in the Truckee Meadows.

YOUTH EDUCATION

Warriors Youth Education Program

KTMB-WasteWar-Galena.jpg

In 2021, KTMB was still navigating the residual challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.  WCSD closed all schools to in-person visitors, so we responded by adapting presentations to a virtual learning format.  By June 30, 2021, KTMB reached 1,043 students during the 2020-21 school year.  Coupled with day camps, other youth programs, and WCSD selecting KTMB as an enrichment resource for summer school, we reached an additional 102 students in July - more in that month than any other year- totaling 1,145 students educated.  Although the pandemic impeded our reach, KTMB's efforts resulted in tangible success.

KTMB's "Warriors" Youth Education program inspires students to think and act as environmental stewards though free in-classroom presentations.  The program includes three modules featuring hands-on, place-based lessons:

  • Waste Warriors, which introduces students to the waste stream and inspires them to create solutions to reduce waste and prevent litter and illegal dumping

  • Weed Warriors, which introduces students to invasive and noxious weeds and inspires them to create solutions to stop their spread

  • Watershed Warriors, which introduces students to the myriad of challenges facing the Truckee River watershed and inspires them to create solutions to protect and preserve the river for future generations

The STEM-themed lessons are standards-aligned and available for teachers for free online.  KTMB presents to students throughout the Truckee Meadows in public school classrooms, after-school programs, summer day camps, and more.  The program specifically targets underserved public schools to empower students to problem-solve neighborhood blight and other environmental issues in order to improve the quality of life, health, and economy in the Truckee Meadows.
