Unusable appliances for recycling:

Accepts household appliances for free from Waste Management customers, they remove freon and other chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) on-site, and send to local business for recycling.

Schnitzer Steel:
(775) 331-2267, will pay for scrap metal, call for up to date pricing. Will take most appliances, but no microwaves. Will take refrigerators / air conditioners and refrigerator compressors / air conditioner compressors, but the compressor has to be removed from the refrigerator / air conditioner and drained of freon (call appliance repair companies for freon removal) prior to drop-off.

Reno Sparks Gospel Mission:

ASBESTOS

Lockwood Landfill:

H2O Environmental:

MEDICAL WASTE

Waste Management:
Residents can call Waste Management Corporate (number 775-329-8822) and get a mail in container for sharps and other medical waste.

Northern Nevada HOPES: (sharps)
Contact Northern Nevada HOPES about their Syringe Services Program (SSP).  Anyone who has a “barrier” to disposing of syringes properly may qualify for the program. Sharps drop-off station at Change Point Harm Reduction Center at 445 Ralston St., Reno.  

Washoe County Health District:
(775) 328-2434 Washoe County residents can contact the WCHD for free sharps containers to dispose of used sharps. To use this program you must have an established residence in Washoe County and have mobility issues.

Other sharps drop-off locations:
– Volunteers of America has large outdoor sharps kiosk located in the “day area” at the Record Street campus.
– Red sharps disposal box at the Washoe County Offices on E. 9th Street, Reno 89512. Between the two entrance doors of Building B at the Clinic Services entrance, which faces Wells Avenue. The doors are open 8-5 weekdays. Park in the County lot nearest the Rodeo Arena.

PAINT

Latex paint can be dried out and thrown in curbside trash, or taken in liquid form to H20 Environmental. Oil-based paint is considered hazardous and needs to be taken to H20 Environmental. Empty paint cans can be recycled.

To be recycled plastics must have a number on the container, usually located within the three arrow recycling symbol. In Washoe County #1 – #7 plastics can be recycled.

SMOKE ALARMS

If the smoke alarm has a radioactive symbol on it no one in the area will accept it for recycling. Please contact the manufacturer of the smoke alarm.

STYROFOAM

Styrofoam is a brand name, the white rigid packing material is generically referred to as Expanded Polystyrene (EPS).
