KEEP TRUCKEE MEADOWS BEAUTIFUL ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20

A Letter from our Executive Director

Unprecedented. As I look back on FY19-20 the first thing that comes to mind is the term “unprecedented.” In every way. The last decade has been a time of extraordinary growth for Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful. We recently updated our mission statement to include “waste reduction” and “sustainability.” KTMB’s new mission statement reads:

“Dedicated to creating a more sustainable and beautiful region through waste reduction, education and active community involvement.”

This update was more than 30 years in the making and we are all proud of KTMB’s growing impact.

Then came March 13, 2020. Friday the 13th was the last “normal” day in the office for many of us during calendar year 2020. Now when we get together as staff, and with volunteers, we are wearing a mask, we have hand sanitizer at the ready, and no one gets a hug. Unprecedented.

With crisis comes opportunity, and at KTMB we know how to take advantage of an opportunity. Zoom meetings help cut down on carbon emissions, saves time and money; virtual teacher trainings allow educators from across the state to join; and shared challenges have opened the door for collaboration in unprecedented ways for the betterment of everyone.

As unprecedented as things are, some things remain the same. The impact of KTMB volunteers continues to impress. In April, the pandemic forced the cancellation of KTMB's annual Great Community Cleanup. However, 200+ volunteers worked hard over several weekends in June and July. Wearing face masks and keeping at least 6 feet from each other, 25% of our usual number of volunteers removed 73% as much green waste and 63% as much trash as the 2019 Great Community Cleanup. KTMB has The Best volunteers and they prove it time and time again.

With WCHD funding we launched a new mobile-friendly website that expands KTMB’s Recycling Guide to help local residents and businesses properly dispose of unwanted items and also access tips for living more sustainable living.

KTMB became a member of the newly formed Nevada Green Business Network. As a member KTMB will manage the GreenBiz Tracker for the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area. This state-wide database offers certification and recognition to businesses that have sustainable practices. Once certified, green businesses are listed in an online searchable directory that the public can find and patronize! Watch for more in 2021.

KTMB's Warriors Youth Education program continues to offer free quality environmental education available all students in the Truckee Meadows. When the COVID pandemic forced the closure of schools, KTMB’s education program pivoted to provide virtual classroom and at home resources to inform and empower residents about waste, noxious weeds, and the local watershed.

Thank you KTMB volunteer, sponsor, and individual donor for your help and support during these unprecedented times. Working together we will achieve KTMB’s vision to become America’s cleanest community!

Sincerely,

Christi Cakiroglu
KTMB Executive Director

BEAUTIFICATION EFFORTS

Truckee River Clean-up

The 16th annual Truckee River Cleanup was held on Saturday, September 28th, 2019. As in years prior, the projects spanned from Verdi to Lockwood and also included some tributaries to the river. The goal of this event is working to keep the Truckee River Watershed clean and pristine for all to enjoy by completing a variety of projects throughout the region.

764 • Total Volunteers
78,603 • Pounds of Greenwaste Removed
23,200 • Pounds of Trash Removed

Great Community Clean-up

KTMB’s Great Community Cleanup is an annual opportunity in the spring for the Truckee Meadows community to come together to focus on the cleanup of illegal dumpsites and the removal of noxious weeds before they bloom and spread. This event normally engages over 800 volunteers in one day; a huge feat and one that became unimaginable to follow through with in the midst of a pandemic. After carefully considering new safety procedures, KTMB began rescheduling the Great Community Cleanup projects over the course of the summer. Only one was completed within the 19/20 Fiscal Year but in total 11 were completed with great success.

227 • Total Volunteers
31,200 • Pounds of Greenwaste Removed
62,030 • Pounds of Trash Removed

Christmas Tree Recycling

The holiday season brought another successful year of Christmas Tree Recycling where we met both our tree and donation goals. By giving residents an alternative to dumping trees in the desert, we’re able to reduce fire risk in our region come summertime. Apart from a few trees that were taken to the Sierra Safari Zoo as toys for their big cats, all of the trees collected were chipped into mulch that has been used for weed abatement and park beautification projects across the Truckee Meadows.

10,213 • Trees Recycled

Illegal Dumping Task Force

Established in 2006, the Illegal Dumping Task Force is a collaborative of local agencies coordinated by Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful to address the issue of illegal dumping and find solutions. The focus in recent years has shifted to abandoned vehicles on public land. Despite the pandemic, our partners have continued to dedicate time to cleaning up dumpsites, including these vehicles.

To report an illegal dumpsite that needs to be cleaned, please call 329-DUMP or use the WCSO app, free in the app store. To report an individual(s) who is actively illegally dumping waste, call WCSO dispatch at 775-785-WCSO.

Sensory Garden

Parks and gardens are some of the few constants in 2020. Regular volunteers have kept the Sensory Garden beautiful since volunteering with KTMB began again in June. We have seen an increase in the number of people stopping by the garden since the start of the pandemic and we estimate that around 6 people visit every daylight hour. Visitors of all ages explore the willow tunnels, discover new plants and insects, and find the serenity of the garden soothing.

205 • Total students brought to the Sensory Garden

EDUCATION

Warriors Youth Education Program

KTMB's Warriors Youth Education program makes quality environmental education available for all students in the Truckee Meadows. The program brings expert knowledge and resources to roughly 5,000 local youth annually in a way that is both attainable and inspiring. Program participants walk away with a clear idea of what they can do in their daily lives to make a positive impact on the community in regards to waste, noxious weeds, and the local watershed. Even in light of COVID, our education program provides valuable resources which inform and empower those in our community whose futures depend on what happens now.

2,746 • Total students educated
86 • Total teachers trained

Community Education

KTMB provides education and outreach around sustainability topics to area residents and businesses. COVID-19 made us change our methods, and we were able to switch our large Earth Month outreach effort to a digital effort in less than a month, with over 50,317 impressions for important information and at-home sustainability tips. We have since taken to providing virtual educational opportunities with great success. We were able to accomplish so much this year, from a series of presentations at Truckee Meadows Community College to a virtual Waste Stream Tour and piloting an outreach effort to provide information on recycling and waste reduction to the Spanish-Speaking members of our community. One of our most notable accomplishments was the introduction of a new digital Recycling Guide.
