Hate Raking Leaves in the Fall?

Well, we've got good news for you- a layer of leaves on the ground is helpful to local insects and animals and can provide nutrients to your plants! Here are some leaf litter facts from Environment Massachusetts:

  • Fallen leaves shelter pollinators, like bees, in the colder months.

  • Leaf litter is home to insects that birds and small animals rely on for food.

  • According to frontiergroup.org, Gas-powered lawn and garden equipment are responsible for 30 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year. Avoiding leaf blowing will reduce your household’s carbon footprint.

  • Leaves break down into nutrients for soil. You can move them to the bases of trees, your garden bed, your compost pile, or your worm bin! Check out more Composting resources here!
