KTMB practices the sustainability we preach. We rally volunteers to remove tons of litter from our public spaces, empower our community to stop the spread of invasive weeds, teach kids to protect our watershed, and much more! Our close-knit staff supports AmeriCorps in both fulfilling our shared mission and pursuing their own passion projects.

KTMB is a private 501 (c)3 nonprofit dedicated to creating a more sustainable and beautiful region through waste reduction, education, and active community involvement. For over 30 years, KTMB has been dedicated to the beautification of the Truckee Meadows, the advancement of a cleaner community and region, large volunteer cleanup efforts, and education that inspires action.

We are currently looking for;

Position Description

The Beautifications and Cleanups Coordinator AmeriCorps will be an essential member of KTMB’s team. In this position you will maintain the high quality of KTMB’s volunteer program including training, managing, recruiting and providing recognition to volunteers. You will work closely with KTMB’s community and municipal partners to assist with the coordination of large scale litter pickup events. You will also work with our Sustainability Education teams to facilitate presentations and service learning opportunities for schools and community groups.

Timeline for Service: October 2024 - August 2025

Beautifications and Cleanups - 60%

  • Implement volunteer training protocols and assist with volunteer management for all three of KTMB’s programs;

  • Implement community events and education programs involving beautification and cleanup projects;

  • Assist in coordinating KTMB’s annual programs including The Great Community Cleanup, The Truckee River Cleanup and Christmas Tree Recycling;

  • Help organize and coordinate KTMB’s Adopt-A-Spot and neighborhood cleanup program through community outreach, communication with municipal partners, and data tracking on Salesforce.

  • Prepare and maintain inventory of supplies and appropriate tools for volunteer cleanups;

  • Facilitate volunteer retention and appreciation events throughout the year through donation solicitation;

  • Recruit and collaborate with community volunteers;

  • Update and maintain KTMB’s project management and volunteer database;

  • Work with KTMB educators to help the community learn about local recycling resources, watershed health, and invasive/noxious weeds;

  • Develop and implement service learning opportunities for schools and community groups;

  • Design and deliver public presentations for a variety of audiences to promote KTMB’s mission for sustainability and environmental education

Sustainability Education - 15%

  • Assist in the enhancement and implementation of community educational presentations, service learning events, community workshops and seminars, and blog posts;

  • Maintain and update KTMB’s Recycling Guide database of community recycling resources primarily through bi-annual check-in calls to the participating businesses and researching sustainable diversion outlets for existing and incoming household items;

  • Assist in the certification and recognition of green businesses in Reno and Sparks, primarily through researching sustainable solutions for businesses that enroll in the program and by accurately documenting their progress

Youth Education Responsibilities - 15%

  • Work with youth at cleanup events to implement interactive service learning opportunities, and staff them as necessary

  • Work with other team members to implement some occasional classroom visits to educate K-12 students

  • Represent KTMB at community events

Communications - 10%

Qualifications

  • Passionate commitment to KTMB’s mission and vision;

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;

  • Exceptional writing skills;

  • Strong communication and public speaking skills;

  • Comprehensive knowledge of environmental science and/or environmental justice;

  • Strong organizational skills;

  • Flexible schedule for potential weekend work;

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, or a related field;

  • Preferred: reading, writing and speaking competency in Spanish language;

  • Required: high degree of initiative, spirit of service, and a sense of humor

AmeriCorps

KTMB’s AmeriCorps positions are funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and will serve with AmeriCorps. Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation, a separate nonprofit, is the AmeriCorps consortium responsible for onboarding AmeriCorps Members for KTMB and other local nonprofits.

Compensation

In return for their service, AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance and are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon completion of their terms. For the 2024-2025 AmeriCorps term and depending on start date, the living allowance is between $17,647 and $25,000 and the education award is between $5,176.50 and $7,395. Other benefits include mileage reimbursement, flex time, and dog-friendly office.

AmeriCorps members are eligible for federal student loan deferment, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance during their service.  AmeriCorps Members are eligible to adjust income-driven repayment plans for federal student loans to $0 during service, and service counts toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).
